Praxis Government and Civics Review
Government: the exercise of political authority over the actions, affairs, etc, of a political unit, people, etc, as well as the performance of certain functions for this unit or body
Civics:the study of the rights and duties of citizenship.
Political Science: Political science focuses on the theory and practice of government and politics at the local, state, national, and international levels.
Understands the concepts of family and community: shape who we are, instill us with values. and define what we consider to be normal.
10th Amendment: the Federal Government only has those powers delegated in the Constitution
Federalism: a system of government in which the same territory is controlled by two levels of government.
a political power reserved by a constitution to the exclusive jurisdiction of a specified political authority.
Federal: having or relating to a system of government in which several states form a unity but remain independent in internal affairs.
State: a nation or territory considered as an organized political community under one government.
Local: the administration of a particular town, county, or district, with representatives elected by those who live there.
Enumerated or Delegated powers: Enumerated powers are those expressly granted to Congress by the Constitution.
Concurrent powers: powers which are shared by both the federal government and state governments.
Natural Rights: People have certain inalienable rights, including Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
Equality: All men are created equal.
Civic Duty: Individuals have a civic duty to defend these rights for themselves and others.
Popular Sovereignty: That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, meaning the government serves the people, that is its primary purpose, and derives its power directly from them.
bicameral: a system of government in which the legislature comprises two houses.
a national legislative body, especially that of the US. The US Congress, which meets at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., was established by the Constitution of 1787 and is composed of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
House of Representatives: As per the Constitution, the U.S. House of Representatives makes and passes federal laws. The House is one of Congress's two chambers (the other is the U.S. Senate), and part of the federal government's legislative branch.
President: the elected head of a republic.
