Ch.3 Matter and Energy
All things are made of atoms, elements are the primary substances and are constantly in motion
Changes of states
SOLID and LIQUID can experience melting (heat is absorbed) and freezing (heat is released )
LIQUID and GAS can experience evaporation (heat is absorbed) and condensation (heat is released)
GAS to a SOLID can experience sublimation (heat is absorbed) and deposition (heat is released)
Physical and Chemical Changes
Physical Change
- A change in a physical property that retains the identity of the substance: a change in state, a change in size, a change in shape
Propertie
s- color, shape, odor, luster, size, melting point, density
Chemical Change
- A change in which the original substance is converted into one or more new substances
Properties-
A characteristic that indicates the ability to form another substance
Temperature
K=273+C
F=1.8C +32
C=F-38/1.8
What is energy?
The ability to do work
Kinetic energy- energy in motion
Potential energy- determined by the position of the object or chemical composition of a substance
Units of energy in chemistry is the Joule and calorie
1cal=4.184J
1kcal=1000cal
