Types of Lighting
Direct
- Lighting system that directs approximately 90 - 100% of the illumination downward to the work surface
- Shadow are created because only a minimum amount of light is diffused
Semi direct
- With semi direct lighting, 60 - 90% of the light is direct downward
- The remainder of the light is direct upward and then reflected back downward
Indirect
- Lighting system recommended for most types of office tasks
- With indirect lighting 90 - 100% of the light is first directed upward
General Diffuse
- Lighting system that direct 40 - 60% of the light directly to the work surface, with the remainder of the light reflected downward
Semi-indirect
- Lighting system was 60 - 90% of the light is directed upward and then reflected downward
- The remainder of the light is immediately directed downward.
Affects Employees
Physically
- Inadequate light increase employees fatigue as a result of excessive eyestrain
psychologically
- Inadequate lighting result in loss of moral and eventually causes a decrease in the quality of employee performance
Task/Ambient Lighting
Definition
- Task lighting illuminates the work surface, while ambient lighting illuminates the area surrounding the work surface
- Task lighting is frequently downward directed while ambient lighting is generally directed upward
- Task/Ambient Lighting results in an efficient, economical use of energy
Advantages
- Is not permanent, which facilitates the rearrangement of workstation in an office area
- Task lighting eliminates glare and reflection
- Installation cost are significantly reduced
- Renovation of work area is easily accomplished

Incandescent
- Is not as efficient as fluorescent

- Continues to be the most common type of lighting system
