- Frontenac was a representative of the king. - Controls the military and looks after the colonies defence. - Dealt with external relations such as trade with FN.
Fur Traders
Merchants
- A person who trades in commodities produced by other people especially one who trades with foreign countries
- Brought goods from France to trade with.
- They played a vital role in the building of extensive networks of exchange of not only goods but of knowledge ideas, cultures and beliefs.
Coureur de bois
- Coureur de bois means runner of the woods.
- The term coureur de bois is refereed to colonists who as of the 1660s travelled to the indigenous territories to gather fur.
- They worked more independetly for themselves.
- They mostly obtained skins and furs from indigenous peoples by trading for manufactured products not by hunting themselves.
Voyageurs
-Voyageur means traveller.
-They were men from from NF who travelled between the fur merchants of Montreal and also the fur trade posts of the great lakes and eventually farther west.
Farmers
Habitants
- They were farmers who lived on seigneuries
- Habitants means inhabitants people who inhabit the land.
- In exchange for the right to establish a farm habitants had to clear the land plant crops and build a house
Seigneurs
- Most seigneurs were men from noble famalies but women and commoners could also become seigneurs.
- Received large lots of land, the land was grants.
- The grants came from the king of france.
Soldiers
- Came to defend NF. - Defended the colony against the haudenosaune and the British. - The king wanted military men to settle in New France so he offered seigneurs to officers who then encouraged their soldiers to settle on their land.
Catholic church clergy
- It is run by Jesuit missionaries
- The catholic church tried to convert the FN to catholic faith
- Clergy was a small group of people that could read and write.
