Challenging Student Behaviors and Theory-based Responses/Strategies
Violence / Self Harm
Tantrums
Watson approach/Behaviorism:
Put the child in a safe space to continue tantrum, but isolate child from social connections; "Nobody wants to play with you...."
self-esteem
Vygotsky: Talk to the student about how they are feeling? Then finds ways to help.
anger
I see that you are feeling mad and frustrated, let's think of some ways we can calm down
disrespectful
Thordike: Praise the students who are showing respect towards the teacher or classmates.
entitlement
Vygotsky: You are part of a unit and no one here is better than anyone else. When you behave that way how do you think this affects your friends and teachers?
Yelling
Social Constructivist
Positive class reinforcement for our inside voices, and asking the class how we feel when our friends are loud or shout
// Ask students questions and open a dialogue about our emotions / try to determine why the student was yelling. (SEAT?)
Cursing/Mocking
Social Constructivist
utilize your relationship with the student to determine where they are learning the words/behavior and help them understand why we shouldn't do it.
Stealing snacks/toys from others
Watson approach/Behaviorism:
Take their snack toys and give to child they stole from
Breaking toys (intentional or not)
Watson
Lying
Social Constructivist
Ask the student to walk with the library with you and discuss with them, why lying is something we should avoid. Dig deeper as a teacher to understand why they lied and give them solutions
blaming
Corta's Space
Learning avoidance
The student that does participate "thank you Suzy for sharing your thoughts with us"
Excluding other students
Watson: We're going to let you side aside while we participate in this fun activity.
frequent absences
disruptive during class
take away freetime (skinner?)
bullying
Watson approach/Behaviorism: Have the child do to them what he or she was doing to that child, do you like it?
Let's all have a circle time and talk about what happened today
Language Barrier when teachers lack resources
SPED students where the teacher has no training
Refusing to participate
Thorndike: Encourage the repetition through rewards
Reward students who participate, for the challenging student, call on them directly for a basic question and reward.
Inappropriate touching
Students with Bias (students coming to school with prior bias about gender or race)
Thorndike
Praise students for being open minded or showing acceptance. / Reward students for participating in opportunities to be accepting.
Students who are never prepared
Social Constructivism:
Talk to the student to seek to understand their home situation to determine if they have the financial means to get supplies, do homework, etc. If not, find ways to meet those needs or accommodate those needs. Do not fault the child.
Not owning up to their mistakes
Fred we just want you to be honest, are you afraid you are of getting in trouble?
