Behavior Therapy & Biomedical Therapies
Systematic Desensitization
. - A therapist guides a client through a series of steps meant to reduce fear and anxiety.
It consist of 3 steps and is mainly used for phobic disorders.
The client is taught to associate relaxation with each part of the hiearchy.
Once, the client can remain relaxed for the first situation, he moves on to the next and so on,
Eventually the client will be asked to take a flight, and thus conquer his/her fear
The client is asked to relax through deep muscle relaxation training.
The client and therapist construct a list called “Hiearchy Of Fears”, ranging from what causes the least fear, to the most fear.
Under the guidance of the therapist, the client begins from the first item in the list, looks at it/actually confronts it, all while remaining in a relaxed state.
Example :
Watching a plane fly overhead
Going to an airport
Buying a ticket
Stepping into the plane
Seeing the plane door close
Taking off
Being in the air
Flooding
