Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
Pathology:It is a common respiratory virus. It targets your lungs, especially small air pathways (bronchioles)
It is one of the most frequent causes of childhood illness.
Most children get the virus by 2 years of age.
Signs and Symptoms
Coughing and sneezzing
Runny nose
Fever
Trouble sleeping
congestion
mild headache
Treatment
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) to treat the fever or pain
Drinking fluids to stay hydrated and eating regularly even if you have a low appetite.
Using a cool mist vaporizer to soothe dry breathing passages if recommended by your doctor.
Getting plenty of rest.
Applying saline nasal drops to loosen mucus in your nose.
Diagnosis
Provider will examine lungs using a stethoscope
Provider will check O2 levels with pulse ox
Swab test
Blood sample can also be taken
If its a more severe than provider will order x rays and CT scans
