The wealthy
- During the Victorian era the class were very distinguished
- The wealthy did not pay attention to the poor
- Charles Dickens wrote this novella to raise awareness about the suffering the poor had to face
- Also he wanted to make it clear happiness doesn't come with money
- Dickens uses this novella as a social campaign
- Dickens uses the characters Ignorance and Want as a mouthpiece to share his thoughts on society

Childhood
- Charles Dickens was born on the 7th of February 1812
- He was the second of eight children
- His father went to prison therefore at 12 he was taken out of school to move closer to the prison
- Later at 15 he was taken out of school again and had several jobs
- To help with the family's income
- He was born in Portsmouth
Family
- His mother: Elizabeth Dickens 1789-1863
- His father: John Dickens 1785-1851
- His father went to prison when he was 12 due to not paying off his debts
- They were a sociable family
- Meanwhile Charles Dickens worked in a shoe blackening factory
- Elizabeth and John were married in 1809
Work
- He began his literary career as a journalist
- moved on to become a parliamentary journalist in 1833
- In his job he was required to report on factual events
- Some may believe this made him more socially aware
- Giving him the inspiration he needed to include numerous areas of social commentary within his work
Marriage and Children
- Charles Dickens got married on 2nd of April 1836
- To Catherine Dickens (1815-1879)
- However they later got a divorce in June 1858

- Charles Dickens died on 9th of June 1870
