THE SOURTHEN MOVEMENTS IN SOUTH AMERICA
The Peasant Movement
Historically, the peasantry in Latin America was subjected to strong domination by landlords, under extremely negative conditions of cultivation and organization. In this context, only the indigenous communities had the means to direct and organize themselves, despite the repression to which they were subjected for centuries. This sector was the head of a popular insurrection that became a fundamental reference throughout the region: the Mexican Revolution of 1910, which had a significant peasant base. The democratic struggle against Porfirio Diaz was led mainly by middle-class democratic parties, which, due to the need for a political base, were closer to the peasantry, producing a very strong articulation between the peasant movement and the Mexican democratic struggles.
