Nervous System - Coggle Diagram
Nervous System
Peripheral Nervous System
(connects body to brain & spinal cord)
autonomic nervous system
(controls involuntary actions)
Sympathetic
(a network of nerves that helps your body activate its “fight-or-flight” response)
Parasympathetic
(a network of nerves that relaxes your body after periods of stress or danger)
somatic nervous system
*(controls voluntary actions)
Sensory nerves receive info and send impulses to the brain or spinal cord.
Motor neurons conduct impulses from brain or spinal cord to muscles or glands throughout the body.
Central Nervous System
(coordinates body activities)
The Brain
(main control center)
Cerebrum
(responsible for voluntary or conscious activities)
cerebellum
(controls balance and coordination)
brain stem
(connects the brain and spinal cord and controls important functions like blood pressure, heartbeat, breathing and swallowing)
thalamus
(receives messages from all senses and sends them to the proper part of the cerebrum)
hypothalamus
(controls recognition of hunger, anger, thirst, fatigue and controls body temp.)
Spinal Cord
(main highway that the info travels from brain to body)
main cable
bundles of neurons that carry impulses from all parts of the body to the brain and vice versa.
Nerves
*(the signal carries)
Functions
Sensory Input
gathering information about the world around you via your senses
Integration
the interpretation and understanding of the signals sent from the senses
Motor Output
the brain sends a response out
