Nervous System
Major Functions of Nervous System
transmits signals between the brain and the rest of the body which includes internal organs. It controls the ability to move, breathe, see and think.
Major Divisions and Subdivisions of the Nervous System
Major -Sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic, and enteric nervous system
Subdivisions- central nervous system, peripheral nervous system
Tissues
Nervous tissue is found in the brain, spinal cord. and nerves which is responsible for coordinating and controlling many body activities . Stimulates muscle contraction and creates awareness of the environment.
Classification of neurons
Scientist classify neurons into three broad types: sensory, motor, and interneurons
Connective Tissue Coverings
The outermost connective tissue sheath surrounding the entire muscle is the epimysium, The connective tissue sheath covering each fasciculus is called the perimysium and the innermost sheath that surrounds individual muscle fiber is the endomysium.
Major parts and functions of the brain
Cerebrum-interprets sights, sounds and touches. Regulates emotions, reasoning and learning.
Cerebellum- maintains balance, posture, coordination and fine motor skills
Brainstem- your brainstem regulates many autonomic body functions
Major parts and functions of the spinal cord
Cervical (neck), Thoracic (chest), Lumbar (lower back)
It directs your body's voluntary muscle movement and monitors sensation of touch, pressure and temperature and pain. Also regulates urination, body temp and heart rate.
Action potential and Nerve Impulse
Nerve Impulse is a signal transmitted along a nerve fiber which consists of a wave of electrical depolarization that reserves potential difference across the nerve cell membranes . Action potential occurs when the membrane potential of a specific cell area rapidly rises and falls, this depolarization then causes adjacent locations to simply depolarize.
Cranial Nerves
A set of 12 paired nerves in the back of your brain, cranial nerves send electrical signals between your brain, face, neck and torso.
Spinal Nerves
Mixed with nerves that interact directly with the spinal cord to modulate motor and sensory information from the body's periphery.
Neurotransmitters
Referred as the bodys chemical messengers. It is a signal molecule secreted by a neuron to affect another cell across a synapse. The cell receiving the signal may be another neuron.
Reflex Arc
A neutral pathway that controls a reflex, in vertebrates, most sensory neurons do not pass directly into the brain but synapse in the spinal cord. This allows for faster reflex actions to occur.
Disorders/ Diseases
Alzheimer's-affects brain function and memory/behavior
Epilepsy- brain disorder
Strokes- blockage of blood supply to the brain or when blood vessel in the brain burst
Drugs of Abuse
Alcohol, Cocaine, Heroin, Amphetamines
