Alkanes
Crude oil composition
Contains a wide range of alkanes, with the majority being larger alkanes, the demand for larger alkanes is small so they are often turned into smaller alkanes via a process called "cracking"
-
-
Description
Alkanes are hydrocarbons, they are fully saturated and have the general formula CnH2n+2. They are fully saturated as hey only contain single bonds.
-
Alcohol
-
Lower chain ones, such as ethene, are more volatile and will catch fire when lit.
-
Uses
Industry, drinks, sterilising products such as hand sanitiser.
Alkenes
They are hydrocarbons made by the cracking of alkanes . They contain a double bod which makes them more saturated. Smaller chains are used to make plastic They are rarely burned. Htey have general formula CnH2n
