Industrialization and Progress
Nationalism
Nationalism is a desire by a large group of people (who share the same culture, history, language, etc.) to form a nation fueled by intense patriotism and loyalty.
Marginalization
Marginalization by Race
Only 5% of white men in the south owned a slave. Very few owned more than 10 slaves.
Marginalized is being treated as unimportant or being pushed to the side, denying opportunities to a group, and keeping someone powerless.
The Mud sill theory:
25% rich, white slave owners
75% all poor, white, non-slave owners
0% black slaves
Industrialization
Industrialization led to the creation of big and powerful businesses
The Industrial age is creating the ultra rich and the major poor.
The Gilded age
By 1900 there were 4,000 millionaires. 90% of all wealth was owned by 10% of the population. This began the global struggle between capitalist & social/communist forces.
Mark Twain called it the "gilded age". His novel depicted the corruption, suffering, and greed of the Industrial age.
Gilded means something plated in gold but not truly golden
Immigration
Immigration is movement of people into a country from another part of the world. In this era Immigration was mostly from Europe
Progressivism
Muckrakers
Investigative journalists who attempted to expose the human suffering brought on by industrialization
Unionization
An organized group of workers who unite to make decisions about affecting their work. By the 1900s, 10% of workers unionized.
Positives and Negatives of Nationalism
Positives: people brought together, overthrow of colonial rule, democracy and self-rule spreads, competition between nations leads to innovation in technology
Negatives: Forces assimilation: growth of colonial empires, extreme nationalism grows (such as nazism), competition between nations leads to war.
