Governor
A Governor controlled the military and looked after the defense of the colony
A governor represented the king.
Intendant
An intendant is the chief administrator of the colony
An intendant works to keep the colony less dependent on France for meeting its basic needs.
An intendant also keeps his eye out for new ways to exploit the colony to benefit france.
Bishop of Quebec :
The bishop represented catholic church
François de laval established a seminary to train priests in new france
François de laval was the first Bishop of the Diocese of Quebec in the late 1600s
"Farmers"
Habitants
Habitants were farmers who lived on seigneuries
Some habitants gave up farming to make their living in the fur trade
In exchange for the right to establish a farm, habitants had to clear the land, plant crops, and build a house
Seigneurs
Seigneurs owned seigneuries
Seigneurs received the land as grants from the king of france
Women and commoners could also become seigneurs
Soldiers
Soldiers defended the colony against threats like the british and the haudenosaunee
The king offered seigneuries to officers, who then encouraged soldiers to live on their land
Many soldiers chose a military career because they needed some way to make a living
Fur traders

Voyageurs traveled between the fur merchants of montréal and the fur trade posts of the great lakes
The voyageurs were men from new france
Merchants
Many merchants made their living in the fur trade. They imported goods from France and traded these goods with the first nation
Merchants bought furs from coureur de bois and other colonists.
Merchants shipped their furs to France where they hoped sell them for a profit
Coureur de bois
The coureur de bois sold their furs wherever they could, even in the British colonies
Some habitants become coureur de bois
The coureur de bois worked independently which later became illegal, but they did not stop doing it
The Catholic Church/Clergy
The churches provided spiritual and moral guidance
The clergy were a small group of educated people who could read and write
Many people consulted the clergy before making important decisions. (Politics and economic)
