Coureur de bois means "runner of the woods". which basically meant seek and trade with the first nations.
At first the government of New France made fur trading legal but then the government made it illegal.

Habitants
The Habitants made in exchange, they got to build a farm and they had to clear their land, plant crops, and build a house.
The word habitants means inhabitants and it just meant people who inhabit the land. In France they call them peasants.

They were farmers who lived on seigneuries. seigneuries were large amounts of land that were owned by seigneurs.
