Our natural resources are coming under increasing pressure with the need for energy production. What
approach can be taken to tackle this global issue?
Solar
Strengths - Free Energy, Reduced Cost, Stable Cost
Weaknesses - Unusable on cloudy days or at night - Requires large area
Opportunities - Sunny areas such as Middle East or Africa receive much light
Threats - Unreliable due to sun exposure
Wind
Strengths - Efficient energy conversion rate
Weaknesses - Noisy and not aesthetically pleasing, Requires remote areas
Opportunities - Much wind out at sea, coastal locations are remote and have strong winds
Threats - Unpredictable weather can cause lack of power
Tidal
Strengths - Very predictable, Cheap maintenance, Reliable
Weaknesses - Can effect the ecosystem, Expensive installation, Energy output sometimes doesn't match demand
Opportunities - Anywhere coastal can install to gain energy
Threats - Scarcity of suitable location
Geo-Thermal
Strengths - Always Available, Low maintenance, Silent
Weaknesses - Location restricted, Some emissions but lower then FF
Opportunities - Volcanoes can be used to gain energy like in Iceland
Threats - An eruption would cause the loss of all materials and would be expensive
Hydropower
Strengths - Flood control, Clean water, Irrigation support, Can begin energy generation instantly, Affordable, Enormous energy
Weaknesses - Major environmental impact, Displaces people, Relocates the water from dam to downstream source
Opportunities - Existing dams and bridges can be turned into hydropower stations reducing cost
Threats - Dam failure can be fatal and destructive, Droughts can make hydropower ineffective
Crude Oil (Multiple types)
Strengths - Cheap, High density energy, Allows for economies to grow, Used to create plastics through cracking
Weaknesses - Major greenhouse gas emissions, Not a renewable source of energy
Opportunities - Used to make plastics, power cars, and heat homes
Threats - Possible to run out of oil or for there to be a shortage meaning energy prices rise
