TITRATION OF ACIDS AND BASES
APPARATUS
600mL BEAKER
250mL ERLENMEYER FLASKS
500mL VOLUMETRIC FLASK
RETORT STAND
ANALYTICAL BALANCE
HOT PLATE
50mL BURETS
WEIGHING PAPER
CHEMICALS
10M SODIUM HYDROXIDE
OTHER UNKNOWN ACIDIC SAMPLE
POTASSIUM HYDROGEN PHTHALATE
PHENOLPHTALEIN SOLUTION
PROCEDURE PART 1
Prepare about 1L CO2 free waterby boiling distilled water.
Weighthree samples of pure KHP with weighing paper between 0.4 and 0.6grams of KHP.
Place each KHP sampleinto a separate 250mL Erlenmeyer flasks.
Record the masses and label the flasks.
Add the boiled water between 15 and 50mL to each Erlenmeyer flask.
Swirl thecontents of each flask.
Add two to four drops of phenolphthalein soluti onto each flask.
Pour some NaOH solution into the buret and allow it to flow through the buret. Collect in a small beaker.
Then turn stopcockto the closed position.
Fill the buret completelyto the 0mL mark with NaOH solution.
Record the initialburet reading.
Add NaOH solutionto one of the flasks containing KHP solution whilegently swirling the contents of the flask.
Add NaOH solutionuntil the KHP turned completely pink.
Record the buret reading.
Repeat steps 4 and 5for the two other Erlenmeyer flasks.
SAFETY PRECAUTION
WEAR RUBBER GLOVES WHEN HANDLING THE CHEMICALS
WEIGH THE THREE SAMPLES REPEATLY TO GET THE AVERAGE MASS.
BE CAREFUL OF SKIN CONTACT BY HOT WATER.
PROCEDURE PART 2
Calculate the approximate mass of the unknown sample that shouldbe taken.
Weigh three samples of unknown samplewith weighing paper.
Disslove the sample withthe boiled water toeach Erlenmeyer flask.
4.Swirl the contents of each flask.
5.Add a few drops of phenolphthalein solution to each flask.
6.Add some distilled watertoeach flask for better visibility.
7.Fill the buret completely with NaOH solution.
8.Record the initial buret reading.
9.Add NaOH solution slowly to the first Erlenmeyer flask containing KHP in unknown sample.
10.Swirl the contents of the flask were gently during this titration.
11.Add NaOH solution until the solution turned completely pink.
12.Record the buret reading.
13.Repeat for the two other Erlenmeyer flasks.
