Secondary storage
Non-volatile, long term storage
Optical
Optical devices use a laser to scan the surface of a spinning disc made from metal and plastic. The disc surface is divided into tracks, with each track containing many flat areas and hollows. The flat areas are known as lands and the hollows as pits.
Magnetic
Magnetic drives (hard disk drives): fairly cheap, high in capacity and durable. They are vulnerable to magnetic fields. A strong magnet could erase the data the device holds
Solid state
Solid state devices require little power, making them ideal for portable devices where battery life is a big consideration. They are also portable due to their small size and durability
Virtual memory
This is used when RAM is full. It takes currently not used data and transferrers it to the hard disk. This frees up space in RAM for other programs and data. When the data in the hard disk is needed it will swapped with a currently not used data to be put in RAM.
However, when using virtual memory it slows the computer as it has a lower access speed compared to RAM. This can be stopped by reducing the need for virtual memory by increasing RAM's storage
