Procedure:Samoan culture = high power distance index - ranking of children and parent. Social norms limit time spent between adult and children - adults do not intervene in child's learning, they are expected to organise their own. As fishing gear is limited, children don't participate in fishing. Researchers observed that young males spend a lot of time looking at men fishing. Children of 10 y.o. would borrow fishing gear and go fishing on their own without permission. By age 12 children knew how to fish. Multiple-choice tests were given out to 46 children of age 12 about how the system works.
Results: Like the fishing, this is how the children learn the social rules on how to behave and how the system on the island works. No direct instruction, but learn through observation. Test results showed that many children have a broad understanding of concepts of society. Cultural norms are learnt through observation.

GENDER ROLES = range of behaviours that are considered acceptable or desirable for people based on their sex
FAGOT (1978): naturalist observations of parent/child interactions. Researchers wanted to observe reaction of parent when behaviour of child was not gender appropriate.
Results: parents where more in favour of gender-related bahviours, while had negative responses to gender inappropriate behaviour. Interviews were then carried out to these parents, which said things that did not match with their behaviour = SHOWING IT IS NOT A CONSCIOUS BEHAVIOUR

Acculturation
-
-
When moving to a new culture, a battle between enculturation and acculturation is brought up (maintaining culture + changing culture to fit it) = ACCULTURATIVE STRESS = tension of not feeling part of a group. Causes reduction of mental health - depression/anxiety
-
Discrimination or prejudice can learn to high levels of accumulative stress. People may respond to this by reactive identification - strengthening ethnic identity
