Causes of Ethnic Conflict
-EC can occur at all levels of development.
It can be of any form from a simple protest to a fully-fledged war
Territorial Disputes
this can be international or intranational (within a state)
- Example
- Nationalists want a united Ireland while Unionists want to remain apart of UK
disputes between EGs for control over land for its resources or strategic value.
Historical Animosities

Example
- Riots can be caused by the 12th July marches. For P it is a sign of their identity but for C its a sign of P domination.
Even when a conflict ends, disputes between groups can last for generations as the new generation will be taught the wrongdoing of the opposing EG, keeping potential for future conflict
Racism and Sectarianism
Racism/ Sectarianism -
prejudice against a group on due to their race/ religion.
Discrimination
against a particular group by the majority group can cause uproar and provoke conflict
Example
- Racism - In S Africa the apartheid system condemned non-white population to an underclass in society . Protests led by Nelson Mandela fighting for rights
Example
- Sectarianism - C population were discriminated against in gov and employment. Led to the troubles
Cultural Conflicts
Int Migration
has caused the global mixing of ethnicities. Differences in language, ideas and culture has meant some groups cannot resolve conflicts . The host pop may not like presence of other ethnicities
Example
- US maintained military bases in Saudi Arabia. The fundamentalist Muslim pop were outraged as they regarded W culture as immoral and anti-muslim. This lead to Al-Qaeda terrorist attacks in the W
Human Rights Abuses
Groups of people are targeted and extremely discriminated against, this leads to conflict as a form of protest to the gov. UN defines human rights as 'the basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled'
Example - Rwanda majority Hutu pop killed over 1m minority Tutsi people. This is genocide and caused ethnic cleansing of Rwanda.
Discrimination
In some ethnically diverse societies, the allocation of resources or unfair political practises seems to favour the ruling group. This leads dissatisfaction + often breeds conflict.
Example
- NI districts were mapped to max unionist rep on local councils
A group in power will attempt to maintain control so they will discriminate the minority to remain in power
