It is evident that Jesus knew that he was in grave danger by going to Jerusalem, this was a direct challenge towards the Roman & Jewish authorities.
Upon arrival the number of Jesus' followers going to Jerusalem had fallen to only the most loyal, due to them not wanting to face the danger of Jerusalem.

Upon arrival Jesus' first task was to cleanse the temple of salesmen, who were trying to make economic benefit of God's house.

For the Jewish leaders of the temple, this act was treated as a direct threat towards them and their authority.

All four gospels refer to a placard that states "The King of the Jews". In Mark we read about "the inscription of the charge against him read, 'the king of Jews'". (Mark 15:26)

In the eyes of judaism any challenge towards their religion is seen as a direct threat towards the destruction of the temple, this is treason in Judaism.
At the time of Roman Rule, death by crucifixion was very common, resulting historians not arguing over how Jesus died.

Historians believe that crucifixion was one of the most painful & humiliating methods to kill the lowest of criminals.
There is no doubt that Jesus was stripped & nailed to the cross, for a cruel and painful death.

Jesus' actions in Jerusalem resulted in him getting arrested and put on trial, he was condemned to death.

It is clear though that Jesus had appeared in front of the Jewish leaders, the Sanhedrin as well as the Roman Authorities, in the person of Pontius Pilate.
The arrest, trial and crucifixion of Jesus was a high point of all four gospels due to it being so dramatic and shocking.
Jesus' charges (blasphemy or treason) lead to him being crucified and nailed to cross to die slowly.
In court Jesus was falsely accused of claiming to be the "Messiah" or "Son of God", which was incorrect.
Jesus never claimed to be any of these but his followers would call him their "Messiah" or their saviour.

The night before Jesus' arrest and trial, Jesus celebrated a passover meal with the last of his loyal followers
As a show of respect Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, and asked that they would as well in his memory.
