Mulan, I believe, addressed gender stereotypes by demonstrating that women can be valiant :star: and endure the agony and sacrifice that men go through when they go to war. Mulan battled not only for her father but also for herself, demonstrating that she was much more than a housewife :star:. I believe that if she had gone in as a woman in the first place, the man would have laughed at her and refused to let her in. After reading some fundamental text, I discovered that a woman's role can vary substantially. Women had no legal rights to property under the Song dynasty :star:, other than their dowries, and were primarily limited to tasks that could be done at home, such as weaving. The frequent practice of foot-binding, which prohibited women from standing or walking, aided this. Things were very different during the Liao era :star:, and Khitan women were taught to hunt and maintain their families. Upper-class women in these countries might occupy military and administrative positions. I believe this depicts the context of what the battle was like for the men, but we can also view it from a female perspective. I can see why the people, including Mulan, are so upset over ancient China's incorrect gender roles. #social #cultural - Madison K.
