Developmental Cysts
Odontogenic Keratocyst
Originates from the dental lamina
- associated with PTCH1 gene mutations/inactivations
-
Clinical Features
- angle of the mandible
- may or may not be associated with a tooth
- well defined radiolucent lesions
-
-
Histopathology
- keratinised stratified squamous cell epithelium
- palisaded basal cell layer
- corrugated surface keratin
- keratin debris in lumen
- thin fibrous wall with NO inflammation
- daughter and satellite cells present
-
Dentigerous Cyst
-
Clinical Features
- mandible > maxilla
- symptom free unless infection
- ballooning expansion
- radiolucency associated with crown of tooth
Originates from the reduced enamel epithelium
- collection of fluid between REE and and crown of tooth
Histopathology
- thin non-keratinsed squamous epithelium
- mucous metaplasia common
- fibrous capsule
- no inflammation
- odontogenic remnants - rushton bodies
-
Eruption Cyst
-
Clinical Features
- bluish swelling on the gingiva
- deciduous and permanent molars
-
Lateral Periodontal Cyst
-
-
-
Histopathology
- thin non-keratinised eputhelium
- local thickenings/plaques
- uninflamed walls
