Had to recruit settlers or habitants to keep farming the land.
They often owned inhabitants.
Were landlords or noble men from families, women or commoners.
Habitants
Established farms and paid the seigneurs miller to make flour. Some habitants went to the fur trade or voyagers for an easier life to make a living.
Habitants were called peasants and barely owned anything.
Lived on seigneuries and received the land as a grant from the king of france.

Imported goods from france and traded with the Innu people and others.
Made their living from the fur trade.
Bought furs from the coureur de bois and other colonists.
Voyageurs
They paddled canoes. Transported goods and unloaded and loaded canoes.
Travelled from the fur merchants of montreal to fur trade posts of the great lakes and further west.

The Jesuits formed a big part
of the presence of the Catholic Church in New France and tried to convert first nations to Catholics..
