Sedimentology
Fluvial systems
natural levee: moving water pushes sediment up the rivers' edges.
During flood; thickest and coarsest sediments deposited at channel edges. Finest sediments deposited over outer parts of floodplain.
Many floods build up natural levees.

Ocean systems
Barrier islands: made up of deposited sand and vegetation. These islands create a barrier between the mainland and the ocean. They protect the mainland from the forces of wind waves, tides, currents, storms, and hurricanes. It is a constantly-changing deposit of sand.
Micro, meso, and macro-tidal ranges. Macro does NOT create barrier islands.
Long shore current: Generated when a "train" of waves reach the coastline and release bursts of energy. Causes longshore drift which carries sediment out to sea which can cause significant beach erosion. Longshore current velocity increases with a steeper angle.

Three scenarios for their origin: upward shoaling of sub-tidal sand bars due to wave action, generation of long spits due to littoral drift and then breaching to form inlets, and drowning of coastal ridges.
