Principles of training
SPORT
● Specificity
Training matching the needs of the individual or
the sport/position/muscle group
● Progression
GRADUALLY making training harder
● Overload
This means you work the body harder than normal.
This is so the body experiences stress and
discomfort in order for fitness adaptations to occur
● Reversibility
If training stops, then fitness will decline at the
rate it was gained.
● = Training Principles
These are the training principles
FITT
● Frequency – how many times you train in a week
● Intensity – how hard you train
● Time – The length or duration of training
● Type - Ensuring the type of training method
matches the needs of the activity
Frequency - e.g. running 3 times a week rather
than 2 times a week.
Intensity - e.g. lifting heavier weights
Time - e.g. increasing a circuit training session for
30 to 40 mins
Type - e.g. a footballer doing fartlek training to
reflect the change of pace used in a game.
