Eurasia Key Terms
Eurasia- The continents of Europe and Asia considered as a whole.
Ural Mountains- a mountain range in the W Russian Federation, extending N and S from the Arctic Ocean to near the Caspian Sea, forming a natural boundary between Europe and Asia.
Siberia- vast region of Russia and northern Kazakhstan, constituting all of northern Asia. Siberia extends from the Ural Mountains in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east and southward from the Arctic Ocean to the hills of north-central Kazakhstan and the borders of Mongolia and China.
Tundra- a vast, flat, treeless Arctic region of Europe, Asia, and North America in which the subsoil is permanently frozen.
Taiga- the sometimes swampy coniferous forest of high northern latitudes, especially that between the tundra and steppes of Siberia and North America.
Steppe- a large area of flat unforested grassland in southeastern Europe or Siberia
Permafrost- a thick subsurface layer of soil that remains frozen throughout the year, occurring chiefly in polar regions.
Genocide- the deliberate and systematic destruction of a group of people because of their ethnicity, nationality, religion, or race.
Chechnya- republic in southwestern Russia, situated on the northern flank of the Greater Caucasus range.
Caucasus-mountain system and region lying between the Black Sea (west) and the Caspian Sea (east) and occupied by Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia.
Yurt- a circular tent of felt or skins on a collapsible framework, used by nomads in Mongolia, Siberia, and Turkey.
Silk Road- The silk road was a network of paths connecting civilizations in the East and West that was well traveled for approximately 1,400 years. Merchants on the silk road transported goods and traded at bazaars or caravanserai along the way.
Nomad- a member of a people who have no fixed residence but move from place to place usually seasonally and within a well-defined territory.
Czar- an emperor of Russia before 1917.
Supra- a prefix meaning “above, over” (supraorbital) or “beyond the limits of, outside of” (supramolecular; suprasegmental).
Cold War- the state of political hostility that existed between the Soviet bloc countries and the US-led Western powers from 1945 to 1990.
USSR- The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (also known as the USSR or the Soviet Union) consisted of Russia and 14 surrounding countries. The USSR's territory stretched from the Baltic states in Eastern Europe to the Pacific Ocean, including the majority of northern Asia and portions of central Asia.
Russian Revolution- The Russian Revolution was a period of political and social revolution that took place in the former Russian Empire which began during the First World War. This period saw Russia abolish its monarchy and adopt a socialist form of government following two successive revolutions and a bloody civil war.
Baltic- northeastern region of Europe containing the countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea.
Climate of Russia- Russia's climate ranges from steppes in the south through humid continental in much of European Russia, and subarctic in Siberia to tundra climate in the polar north. Winters vary from cool along the Black Sea coast to frigid in Siberia. Summers vary from warm in the steppes to cool along the Arctic coast.
