Eurasia Key Terms
Eurasia- land area consisting of Europe and Asia.
Ural Mountains- a mountain system in W central Russia, extending over 2000 km (1250 miles) from the Arctic Ocean towards the Aral Sea.
Siberia- a large region of North Asia that is part of Russia.
Tundra- a vast, flat, treeless Arctic region of Europe, Asia, and North America in which the subsoil is permanently frozen.
Taiga-the sometimes swampy coniferous forest of high northern latitudes, especially that between the tundra and steppes of Siberia and North America.
Steppe- a large area of flat unforested grassland in southeastern Europe or Siberia.
Permafrost- a thick subsurface layer of soil that remains frozen throughout the year, occurring chiefly in polar regions.
Genocide- the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group.
Chechnya- A predominantly Muslim region in southern Russia.
Caucasus- border region between SE Europe and W Asia, between the Black and Caspian seas.
Yurt- a circular tent of felt or skins on a collapsible framework, used by nomads in Mongolia, Siberia, and Turkey.
Silk Road- a network of historical trade routes across Eurasia, connecting east Asia with the Mediterranean Sea.
Nomad- a member of a people having no permanent abode, and who travel from place to place to find fresh pasture for their livestock.
Supra- used in academic or legal texts to refer to someone or something mentioned above or earlier.
Cold War- a state of political hostility between countries characterized by threats, propaganda, and other measures short of open warfare.
USSR- Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
Russian Revolution- a period of political and social revolution that took place in the former Russian Empire which began during the First World War.
Czar- a person appointed by government to advise on and coordinate policy in a particular area.
Baltic- relating to the Baltic Sea or the region surrounding it.
Climate of Russia- steppes in the south through humid continental in much of European Russia, and subarctic in Siberia to tundra climate in the polar north.
