Skeletal system
Bone Matrix
-
-
Bone also contains magnesium, sodium, sulfate
and fluoride
-
-
-
-
-
Long bone structure :
Diaphysis - Main shaft of long bone, Hollow, cylinderical shape and tick compact bone. Provides support witout cumbersome weight
Epiphysis - Both end of long bone, Made of spongy bone, Bulbous shape, provides attachment for muscles and gives stability to joints
Articular cartilage - Layer of hyaline cartilage that covers the articular surface of epiphyses. function to cushion joints and blows
Periosteum - Dense, white fibrous membrane that covers bone. Contains cells that form and destroy bone, attaches tendons to bone and contains blood vesseles important in growth and repair
Medullary cavity - tube like hollow space in diaphysis. Filled with connective tissue rich in fat (yellow marrow) Contains blood vessels important in growth and repair
Endosteum - thin, fibrous membrane that lines the medullary cavity
-
-
Ribs
-
-
-
Each costal cartilage of the rib above it; therefore, ribs 8 -10
are indirectly attached to the sternum
-
-
Types of bone cells
-
Osteoclasts ( Oc) - Bone eroding cells, Contains Mitochondria and Lysomes
Osteocytes - Mature, non dividing cells
surrounded by matrix
Cartilage
-
-
Provides strong yet pliable support structure in the
external ear, nose and respiratory passages
-
-
-
Pelvic grindle
-
-
Each coxal bones is made up of three bones that fuse
together - Ilium, Ischium, Pubis
-
Bone Marrow
Type of soft, connective tissue spread over wide area of body
Found in - Ribs Humerus, Bodies of vertebrate, Pelvis, Femur
-
-
-
Hyaline Cartilage
Most common type in the body, Found in rib cage, nose. Covers bone to form moveable joints
Elastic cartilage
Form external ear, epiglottis that covers opening of
respiratory tract during swallowing and eustachian tubes
-
-
-
-
Coordinated movements occur because of the way
bones are joined in joints and the way muscles are
attached to bones
Types of bone: Long bone, Short bone, Irregular bone, Sesamoid bone
-
-
Tibia - Larger, stronger and more medially superficially located of the two leg
bones
