- - - - Because when these kinds of crises usually occur, people distance themselves from it and pretend it is some faraway, nameless place. By keeping the city nameless but having the crisis spread all around the world, it is being shown how these crises will spread without regard as to where they started from.
- - - - There seems to be a gray area, in that Kafka was fated to fall in love with his mother and sleep with his sister. While he did not literally go though with either of these, there were people who acted as stand-ins for these people. One of which, he did fall in love with, and the other he slept with in a dream. While it did not play out the way Kafka had expected, what was told to him had still come to pass in a way.
  - - - Colonel Sanders is a stand-in for fate. He exists to keep people on track with the destiny that has bee decided for them.
      - Johnnie Walker represents the forces that try to distance us from our fate
      - Miss Saeki is a stand-in for Kafka's mom
      - Sakura is a stand-in for Kafka's sister
  - - - Nakata can talk to cats because he is more innocent than those around him. Because he has no perceived limitations, he can accomplish things many who have lost their childhood wonder to be impossible.
    - - No one person exists in a vacuum. What we do as one person affects countless others around us.
    - - The labyrinth on the outside; the woods that Kafka walks through, is a mirror of the labyrinth inside. Both literally, in that many human organs are in a sense a labyrinth, and the labyrinth of the human mind with all the possible paths it can take.
- - - - Janina does not eat animals because she simply does not want to. She is too tuned in with nature to allow herself to kill any breathing part of it.
  - - - The stars draw an outline of our lives that we are destined to follow. We have free will enough to fill in the blanks, but the ultimate destination of our lives and major points along the way are predetermined by the stars.
    - - As justification for actions, such as murdering the hunters. Janina does this.
      - Exploiting natural resources for personal gain, such as the hunters, and defining it in terms of usefulness for humans. Taking the bones of dead dinosaurs and transforming them into fuel to power out cars. The pride of an animals who sees the world as something to be exploited needs to be humbled.
- - - - Yeong-hye then chooses to rebel against this way of life by distancing herself from humanity as much as she can and becoming as plant-like as possible, even if it means her death.
- - - - Sees receiving more benefits than what one needs as excessive, and is proud to only be receiving housing.
      - Was raised on a virtue of not being flashy
    - - Is excited to be receiving benefits
      - Wants to be flashy and show off her daughter, who is much darker skinned than her mother, who thinks it is something to show off

  - - - Her savior complex
        
        Aimee thinks she has done such a great thing for the village and the people who live there, but she does not see how without her continued support, everything will fall apart. This was a one-time thing for her, a short hyper-fixation to make her feel that she has done something good with her wealth. She moves straight on into the next project without contemplating the consequences of her and her money's abrupt departure from the village. She believes she has saved them, when in fact once she is gone, things will likely revert back to the way they had been before her arrival, just with a nicer building to call a schoolhouse.
      - Ignoring the other problems within the village
        
        There is little clean water, they have no electricity, there is one single school. But she will just build a school for girls, and throw money at it once and expect it all to be okay without her constant funding. They cannot charge the iPads she has given them, and the boys are left to suffer in their pathetic schoolhouse. She can only see the trees, not the forest of problems in front of her.
- - - - Tambu, because of her colonized mind, imposes a fake, imagined authenticity onto her people. Tambu's job is to give these tourists what they want, and what they believe to be authentic even if it is not real authenticity. Dancing bare-chested is not the way the villagers would normally perform, but to cater to the expectations of the tourists, Tambu has to ask that of her people.
      - The tourists do not know what authenticity looks like. Instead, they believe in the exotified image presented to them as authenticity, as opposed to being prepared to accept the authenticity they would have been shown if not for these previous expectations. The tourists have preconceived notions of what they expect the people of Tambu's village to act and look like, and being shown something different would not seem authentic to them. Every single one of those tourists has an exotified vision of the people in Tambu's village, and not a single one of those visions is the authentic, true experience of these people.
- - - - Saint Hubert was against hunting, yet he was made to be the patron saint of this thing he hated so much. This perverted system has completely inverted the entire meaning of his life. Essentially using a man who was against hunting as the mascot for it is sick.
      - The "pulpits" the hunters use in the woods share the same name with the stand in church, where people usually stand to read truth and the word of God. In the woods, they are used to spread death. The system has turned them into something completely different, to be used for the opposite purpose of what the name originally entails.
