Alcohol - Coggle Diagram
Alcohol
A compound that contains an -OH group (Hydroxyl group) bonded to a tetrahedral carbon.
Methanol (CH3OH)
the simplest alcohol.
Solvent for fats, oils and resins and Manufacture of dyes, antifreeze and plastics.
Ethanol -
Solvent for paints, glues, pharmaceuticals and explosives.
Toxic to humans
Acute poisoning kills several hundreds a year
Long-Term Poisoning
● Most serious drug problem in the United States.
● 40x more addictive than heroin.
Cyclohexanol
- Intermediate in making chemicals used in nylon
manufacture.
Isopropyl Alcohol
Rubbing Alcohol
Rapid Evaporation
Antiseptic
More toxic than ethanol, induces vomiting.
Used for the manufacture of acetone.
Physical Properties
- Boiling Point
increases as
Molecular Weight
increases.
Solubility
in Water decreases as
Molecular Weight increases
(due to the
increase in C-H).
Alcohols
are
semi-polar
molecules.
● C-O and O-H bonds
- Polar Covalent
● C-H bonds
- Nonpolar Covalent
Chemical Properties of Alcohol
is made up of a chain of carbons and hydrogen, where a hydroxyl molecule attaches to where a Hydrogen molecule is supposed to be attached to Carbon.
The position of the Hydroxyl group has little effect on the chemical properties except in their response to mild oxidizing agents.
Uses of Alcohols
Disinfectants
Fungicides
Solvents
Cosmetics
Liquor
Used to make vinegar
High-Efficiency Fuels
Synthesizes other Organic Compounds
Used in manufacturing plastics
Dangerous Properties
Very combustible/flammable
Poisonous to an extent.
May induce addiction
Bodily damage caused by exposure.
