Morphemese
the minimum unit of meaning, create words
Words
the smallest free form found in language
Free Morphemes
Free morphemes can stand alone
eg. "bake", "dog", "trust", "lie"
Bond Morphemes
Bound morphemes must attach to another morpheme
eg. -er, -ing, -ive, -ed, anti-
"runner", "running", "expensive"
Simple word
A simple word is created from exactly one morpheme
eg. "love", "mean", "soup", "try"

Word Creation

Suppletion
The whole form of the word is changed while retaining a similar lexical meaning.
Partial suppletion is when part of the word changes.
eg. “go” →“went”
Conversion
No change in word form occurs, but stress may change.

eg. Ink (a contract), better (the bread), ship (the package)
N derived from V
(a long) run, (a hot) drink, (a pleasant) drive
V derived from A
dirty ( a shirt), empty (the box), better (the old score)
Clipping
Polysyllabic words are shortened by deleting one or more syllables.
"zoological garden" -> "zoo"
"facsimile machine" -> "fax machine"
Blending
Two non-morphemic parts of words come together to form a blend
"breakfast" + "lunch" -> "brunch"
"brother" + "romance" -> "bromance"
Backformation
New forms are created by removing “real-looking” affixes from a word.
"self-destruction" -> "self-destruct"
"donation" -> "donate"
Acronyms and Initialisms
Acronyms are formed by taking the first letter of words in a phrase or title and pronouncing them as a word.
eg. "Niorth Atlantic Treaty Organization" -> "NATO"
"As soon as possible" -> "ASAP"
Allomorphs
Some morpheme are produced differently depending on the environment.
eg. Bakes, Cats, Dogs
