Week 3: Resumes/Transferrable Skills
What did I do? I created a rough draft of my own personal resume for practice
What did I learn? I learned what a lot of employers/organizations are looking for in terms of personal experience and skills
What was it? The purpose of this was to identify our own personal skills and add them to our resumes
Week 2: Strength/Self-Assessment
What did I learn? I learned about my own personal strengths and how I already apply them to my life, as well as how I can utilize them in the future for personal advantage in certain situations
What did I do? Took a strengths assessment quiz and analyzed my results and did a reflection of them.
What was it? Discovering our own personal strengths and how they contribute to the way we approach and address situations and how we can apply it to our everyday lives
Week 5: Networking and Experiential Learning
What was It? The purpose was to introduce us to different opportunities that could help us make connections, how to improve our applications, and the best ways to move forward based on where we hope to end up
What did I learn? I learned how to apply and search for different volunteer opportunities, co-ops, undergraduate research, and activities
What did I do? I completed the final draft of my resume and learned how I could start to improve it in the upcoming future
Week 4: LinkedIn&Handshake
What did I learn? I learned how to navigate both sites and why they are important since future employers will most likely be viewing this for possible employment
What did I do? Created my own LinkedIn and Handshake profile and started my resume
What was it? The purpose was to introduce LinkedIn and Handshake since these are platforms used to communicate with connections, create resumes, and apply to future jobs
Week 6: Understanding the Patient Experience
What did I learn? I learned that the healthcare field does not focus enough on encouraging people to prevent sickness, but instead resort to quick fixes that will make the patient need to come back and put more money towards their healthcare needs
What did I do? We watched the Escape Fire documentary and completed a reflection of the movie
What was it? The purpose of this was to get a glimpse into the healthcare field and see it for how it is, as opposed to how everyone chooses to see it
Week 7: Patient-Centered Care
What was it? The purpose of this was to talk about empathy and how it applies to inter-professionalism in different careers
What did I learn? I learned how empathetic I am and why its important for future jobs
What did I do? Watched videos on the topic, played bingo, and completed an empathy quiz
Week 8: Social and Cultural Underpinnings
What did I learn? I learned a lot about how biased the healthcare field can be/appear to others both within and outside of the health care system and how these issues are being addressed now and for future healthcare professionals
What did I do? I completed my own individual implicit bias assessment and analyzed my results to see where I fell on the scale
What was it? We addressed biasness within the healthcare system and how it affects the way medical professionals are able to interact with their patients/coworkers
Week 9: Society, Culture, and Ethics
What did I learn? We learned about the extremities within the healthcare systems, more specifically how culture, society, and ethics affects the way that individuals are able to approach healthcare
What did I do? I completed my HIPAA and BBP certifications to test what I learned throughout the week through readings
What was it? The goal of this weeks lecture was to learn how any decisions made in healthcare must be ethical to the patient using HIPAA, individual preferences for personal health, and how different factors can influence the way that people approach theirs and their family's health.
Week 10: Ethics and Exploring Healthcare Careers
What did I learn? We learned about different healthcare careers (what they are, schooling, opportunities, responsibilities, what they do) as well as the diversity that is displayed within each career option and how it can be improved
What did I do? I watched three of the symposium videos and did an overview of each one regarding the speaker, their profession, and their experience with diversity in their own person career lives; i also did a discussion board with peers
What was it? Explored deeper into ethics and its importance as well as the different healthcare careers that we may be interested in
Week 13: Healthcare Career Exploration Group Presentations
What did I learn? I learned about the different careers and types of health care fields ranging from entry level healthcare to hospital care
What did I do? We did group slide decks and presented our given topics (ours was entry level healthcare)
What was it? The purpose was to explore different healthcare professions and distinguish between them and how they are needed daily
Week 14: Personal Finance in College
What did I do? I created my own budget sheet and categorized my spendings based on needs/wants and how much I have to spend as a whole
What was it? The purpose was to introduce the concept of maintaining personal finances during college and controlling how much you spend and save
What did I learn? I learned more about student loans, how to create a budget sheet, good vs. bad spending habits, and different budgeting terms
Week 11: Interprofessionalism
What did I learn? We learned about the different IPA behaviors and why inter-professionalism is beneficial and important
What did I do? We had a guest speaker who discussed how to create a competitive application
What was it? Discussing the core values of professionals who work together and how they can achieve optimal health within themselves and the people in their communities
Week 12: Guest Speaker PPAC Health Professions Interviewing
What did I learn? I learned how to properly approach interviews and what I should and should not do to make the best impression and get the future jobs or into med school in the future
What did I do? Used the different resources that the guest speaker provided to get more insight on what is expected
What was it? The purpose was to prepare us for interviews in the future and how to stay professional do well
