Gameplay
Originating in Japan (the "J" in "JRPG"), often involves a quest to go on with a party or by yourself.
Usually has two main screens: the game world, where you walk and explore the world, and the battle screen, where you will battle enemies
Game world has most of the art, and is what you will probably see for most of the time when playing.
Battle screen happens when you encounter an enemy, and usually has options for fighting, using an item, doing an action, and such.
Level Design
Because of the nature of these games, usually there doesn't have to be a lot of thought put into the game world. As long as it makes sense with the setting of the game, it can really be designed in any way.
However, some JRPGs may choose to implement a puzzle or such into the game, to engage the players more.
Style
Given when JRPGs used to be massively popular, most of these games are created with a style from 80's and 90's games.
Some games like Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts use 3D modern graphics instead, however.
The majority though will try and emulate the look of hardware restricted games, or actually were hardware restricted.
These games employ pixel art, limited palettes, limited sprite sizes, and such.
Some games though will also take advantage of modern hardware, and for instance have better music or a wider palette in their games.
