Types of Cysts - Coggle Diagram
Types of Cysts
Radicular Cyst
INFLAMMATORY CYST
60-75% of cysts in H+N
Originates from the remnants of the cell rests of mallasez and root sheath of Hertwig
Types
Paradental Cyst
radicular cysts associated with lowe 8s
presents as a donut shaped radiolucency associated with lower 8
Residual cyst
presents following the extraction of a tooth
Associated with lateral or apical canals
Associated with a non-vital, commonly endodontcally treated tooth
Appears as a uni-locular radiolucency with the lamina dura intact
Treatment
Lateral/Paradental cyst - enucleation with XLA or apiceptomy of associated tooth
Residual cysts - enculeation or marsupulisation
Keratocyst
Presents as large radiolucency at the angle of the mandible +/- association of tooth
DEVELOPMENTAL CYST
originates from the remnants of dental lamina
5-10% of cysts
Treatment
enucleation and extraction of associated teeth
Curretage of the cavity with Carnoy's solution
Kills daughter cells (cyst has high recurrence rate if not removed)
long term radiographs and monitoring
En bloc resection
Associated with
Naviod Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome
Dentigerous Cyst
DEVELOPMENTAL CYST
Originates from the reduced enamel epithelium
10-15% of cysts
presents as a radiolucency associated with the crown of an unerupted tooth
Treatment
Enucleation and extraction of tooth - common if tooth non-functional or 8
Marsupulisation if unerupted tooth potentially functional with orthodontic alignment e.g. 3s
Non-Odontongenic Cysts
develop from the remnants of the fusion of the embryonic arches
Naso-palatine duct cyst
presents as love heart shaped radiolucency on the hard palate
Naso-labial cyst
swelling or the number lip and displacement of the midline of nose
Staphe's idiopathic bone defect
developmental anomaly where ectopic salivary gland tissue appears in medial aspect of mandible
Bone Cysts
Ameloblastoma
benign odontogenic tumour
Aneurysmal Bone cyst
presents histopathology as a mass of blood filled spaces with scattered giant cells
Solitary Bone cyst
Lateral Periodontal Cyst
DEVELOPMENTAL CYST
Associated with lateral root aspect of a
VITAL
tooth
Gingival Cyst
cyst occurs on the gingiva
associated with dental lamina of a vital tooth
