Seigneurs
Most were men from noble families, but women and commoners could become seigneurs.
To keep their land grants they had to recruit settlers, which were habitants, to farm the land.
Seigneurs often ended up in court with habitants because they did not follow through on their obligations.

They were farmers who lived on seigneuries, which were plots of land granted from the King.

At first independent trading was encouraged, but then it became illegal. The Coureur de Bois still sold wherever they could.
Merchants
They imported goods from France and traded with Innu, Ouendant and the Anishinabe.

Often they were blacksmiths, shoemakers, masons, bakers and butchers.
