Traditional Proofs of God (para: 1, Anslem of Aosta)
The theologian & Anslem of Aosta (philosopher of Canterbury) was born in Aosta in Piedmont in the year 1033.
-
Anslem was one of the first philosophers to try prove that God was real. Resulting in him being known as the 'Father of Scholasticism'.
Anslem began his research by looking at the belief in God, belief in God was more than a question of faith.
Anslem believed that if we all existed there must be some sort of perfect being, resulting in him believing that God was someone greater than everyone else.
-
Resulting in him coming up with the idea that real existence is greater than mere existence. so God must exist in reality and not just understanding.
para: 2, St. Thomas Aquinas
Thomas Aquinace was born in Roccasecca, Italy. In the year 1225 and died in 1274.
Thomas was born into an era where reason was very admired, so in his effort to make faith a topic of discussion he wrote 'The Five proofs Of God'
Proof One~ Motion was the first of his proofs. He drew from Aristotle's observation that each thing in the universe that moves is moved by something else, meaning there must be a "primary mover", being God.
Proof Two~ Efficient Cause meaning that anything in the universe that exists couldn't of caused itself to exit, therefore there must be something powerful enough to cause it to exist.
Proof Three~ Existence of a Necessary Being is someone who logically can not, not exist. It must always exist in every possible world.
Proof Four~ Degrees of perfection meaning that for any given quality or talent there must be a standard of perfection.
Proof Five~ Intelligent Design is how the universe works and is ordered, meaning there must be an intelligent designer.
These proofs meant that philosophers & Thomas Aquinas were trying to argue that faith, especially faith God was rational and would be able to be defended in the philosophical climate of today.
Para: 3, St. Bonaventure
St. Bonaventure was a contemporary of Aquinas. Resulting in him taking on the task of proving God was real in a different manor.
Bonaventure wrote a book called 'The Journey of The Mind to God', this was about the life of St. Francis who was the founder of the Franciscan's.
In this book Bonaventure combined a philosophical approach with the use of reason & logic with religious experience of understanding God.
Bonaventure thought that by looking at the life of St. Francis he could find evidence for the existence of God.
To help him reach this conclusion, he used Anslem's proof for the existence of God
Bonaventure believed that St. Francis had achieved excellence in his life through his life and believed that Francis had done what was beyond human.
To Bonaventure the idea that we could imagine the perfect being, means that there must be someone who is perfect. This being God.
Para 4:Isac Newton
Isaac Newton was born in 1642, he was born in England and died in 1727.
Newton was a physicist and a scientist, despite his efforts to describe the physical universe he understood God was an essential element of the system.
Newton believed that he could prove Gods existence so to do this he looked at the solar system & gravity.
Newton would question why gravity pulls people to the floor, but not our surrounding planets together into one big mass.
The answer to this question had to be that there was an individual that must of carefully placed these planets in these positions.
This pointed at an individual who would of had to be powerful and intelligent enough to govern the movement of these planets as well as the entire solar system.
The person who had done this must of been the perfect being , God.
