Teaching Materilas In ELT
Traditional Practices and Principles
According to Canagarage (2016), English is a language with multiple norms and diverse systems, consequently, there are different variations of English. Traditional ELT teaching materials such as textbooks and other materials are designed for classroom use and their focus is given specifically on the standard varieties from the UK and the US.
Teaching and learning English through traditional practice may lead to a limited and skewed understanding of English speaking people or their comprehension may be confused.
According to Berns (1990), a language is not merely a combination of discrete linguistic and metalinguistic knowledge, but rather a dynamic embedded in a social context, therefore the awareness of the context of English, its world-wide spread, diversity in in its forms and functions and the increased use among non-native speakers.
Practices and Princeples for EIL Framework
The appropriateness of levels, integration of skills being taught in class, quality and amount of exercises are examples of questions which teachers asks
Criteria for evaluating teaching materials
The dominant instructional model of the course should be selected according to the aim of the curriculum and the needs of students. The varieties of English represented in the teaching materials are supposed to be suitable to the focus of the course.
According to Graddol (1997), Emglish no longer belongs to native speakers, in a word EILinvolves a process of claiming ownership of the language, such shape of ownership may be caused by variety of ways to use English for authentic communication
In most cases, American and British are the two most common choices for instructional models, as they are considered to be legitimate and respected in many contries.
However, before getting introced students with English variations, there is a necessity for preparing them to encounter with other varieties.
Consideration about preparing studnets for encountering with other varieties of English is not included in the curriculum which prevents teachers from the process of careful selection and development of teaching materials
The use of pre-packaging teaching materials will increase students' awareness of English varieties, as such materials are designed including different accents of English
Another way of exposing students with different types of English is owin to supplementary materials - both those created for pedagogical purposes and non-pedagogical purposes that include textual, audio and visual samples of other varieties of English.
Steps for supplementing materials
