In the tale, the cat is moved not only by his goal of surviving, but also of making his "master" a wealthy and powerful man. Throughout the story, we can see that the goal of moving up the social ladder is clear, especially when he presents his then humble master as the powerful Marquis de Carabas, who only grants the cat the opportunity to survive because he wishes to have a better life for himself. That being said, the cat is not worried about moral standards, as he murders and fools people in order to get what he wants.
