Fairytales, monster parent, Winning the affection of a parent/trying to…

- - - - Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder
      - Balance in the world between beauty and intelligence, can't have more of one or another, there must be a balance in order to appear attractive in all aspects
      - Is there really a fair trade off? Everyone did get what they wanted, but is it fair? Is fairness really a concern of the story?
      - Main male character is not a prince charming-he is actually quite ugly
    - - Physical transformation: The fairy tales under beautiful freaks are about the physical transformation of characters, most of which actually don't change their appearances, but are seen through a new light that really shows their personality. In the fairy tales those who are "freaks" are seen to become normal or beautiful in peoples eyes, yet many of them are the same "freak" from the beginning of the story. Even in some cases where there is a change in physical appearance, like in Riquet the Tufted, it can be interpreted that there really was no change in the appearance of the character, rather a change in view in those around said character.
      - Social Transformation: : Transformation is usually not a transformation of character, rather an example of social mobility, which clearly at the historical time period of these fairytales is very uncommon, so uncommon that the movement between social classes is sometimes one of the main parts of the "happy ever after" of the story.
  - - - Animality: The donkey skin makes her unappealing, like an animal, and serves as a disguise as well, to make her "different"
      - Dirt: Make her unlike a princess, like the donkey skin, and to "downgrade" her in society. The dirt takes away her femininity and makes her undesireable
        
        Making herself darker with the dirt makes her lower in society, there is something to be said about how race is interpreted at this time, hinting at the fact that she is no longer white=no longer desireable
  - - - Beauty giving her life for her father
      - Beauty is sacrificed to the beast
  - - - Childrens bodies can be molded and modified to the perfect normal that they are supposed to be at
      - Treating them (children and their bodies) like art
      - Patricia Piccinini is an artist with a vision to create strange and different creatures and characters without trying to make them seem different or abnormal or weird. Kind of the opposite of what the Orthopaedia did. She was interested in biology and art and from those two stemmed her artwork. She is focused on how interesting differences can be, rather than how wrong or strange being different can be. She plays with the idea of what it means to be human and how we define what we as humans should look like and are capable of. She also discusses in her work how these different creatures are medically incredible and may be what our future looks like.
- - - - Modernization from a media standpoint would be like Cinderella from 2015 and Cinderella from 2021
      - Reinventing the story would be like Pretty Woman, Maid in Manhattan, and Sneakerella
      - Same idea and same story, not particularly a reinvention, a modernization but not from a media standpoint (a more realistic Cinderella if you will) would be like A Cinderella Story
    - - Magical intervention
    - - Jealous sisters: focused on looks and men rather than family and kindness
      - Bettelheim: Bettelheim talks about how in Cinderella the sibling rivalry stems from the idea that children feel that sometimes they cannot win the love of their parents and have to compete with their siblings to do so as well.
        
        Winning the affection of a parent: There are also some freudian elements in Cinderella where it can be interpreted that she wants to win her fathers love in a sexual way

      - Animal for human (meat)
      - Ogress throwing herself into the pit of snacks in place of the queen, her children, and the butler
      - Lies for truth
  - - - concentration in the idea that those who are mistreated by others or by the world have a happy ending coming for them just because of how pitiful they are
      - Culturally has elements of creole language and has to do with the historical parts of creole culture. For example the watercress that the main character eats tells us the types of food that were available to those who were poor. Along with that we also see the other wide, what those who had money could eat. And we see nature as well, with all the different birds that are around in the story.
        
        The evil neighbor also "sails" away to her dreadful end. In the time of the story, slavery was still alive and terrorizing the world. Using the particular word sail could imply the idea that maybe the awful neighbor met her end through the slave trade and the main character was spared by some magical interference that also granted her the pumpkin.
- - - - Wealth was distributed in many different ways in the past. One way was through primogeniture, the distribution of family wealth when the parents pass away, where essentially the eldest gets the most wealth and the distribution becomes lesser as the children get younger. Another is a dowry which is a payment of money or land or something with value to it to the wife's family makes to the husband for the wedding. The last is the transmission of wealth from the husband to the wife when the husband passes away.
