NEURONS AND SYNAPSES
NEURONS
Essential part of communication within the body, they receive information and transmit to other cells.
The cellular structure of all neurons the same, differences in sizes depending on their functions
-
-
RELAY
Carry signals form one part of the CNS to another, connect motor and sensory neurons
-
SENSORY
Message the brain information form external environment, process information coming IN from the sense
-
Only found in brain, visual system and spinal cord
NEURONAL TRANSMISSION
Neurons transmit electric signals called action potentials. the message travelling is through action potentials (like a mexican wave). the presence of a myelin sheath on a neuron changes the rate of a transmission
A SYNAPSE
The space between neurons. The action potential (electrical current) needs a way of crossing the gap between separate neurons. A synapse can be electrical or chemical. Chemical synapse use neuron transmitter to carry the messages across the gap
multipolar, send and receive messages from many sources + variation in structure
