Process of Identifying and Helping a Student in Need of Special Education
Recognize and identify the difficulties of the struggling student.

Unresponsive or distracted in group assignments or individual tasks.

Make accommodations for the student and apply suggestions made by the school counselor.
Ways to accommodate.
Leave out the questions that ask for higher-order thinking, especially in math.
First, teach whole-class. Then, teach individually in order to check for understanding.
Rephrase a sentence or question for the student to understand better.
Give definition of vocabulary words.
Break down the workload into bite-sized tasks so the student is not overwhelmed.
If a student struggles with writing, have them express their answer with pictures/drawings.
Have a helping partner to sit next to the struggling student.
Adjust the workload, and give frequent breaks.
Tailored reward system.
Customization of assignments to match student’s interests.
Involve parents to cooperate in helping student improve.
Ways to involve parents.
If the student has not shown a clear understanding of the lesson, send the classwork home and ask for the parent to translate it to their child in their native language to help them understand better.
Consult with school administration and arrange a parent-teacher conference. Be honest, caring and respectful when talking to the parent.
Make sure to keep any written work to show that the student is struggling.
Plan and provide a strategy to help the student at home. And share what will be done at school specifically for their child.
Be in continual communication with parents, preferably daily at the end of each school day, to give feedback and encouragement.
Share with parents what the student’s needs are.

Determine if the struggling student is not improving after all accommodations provided by the teacher and adjustments suggested by the school counselor have been made.
Identify instances and keep records of the struggling student.
