Self Led Action Plan 2022
Specific
Condense gear
To get better at this I can practice packing gear. Also when I get bored I play around with gear a lot, so I can mess with making things more compact, or saving weight and space on some things. It's just fun to play around with, so even doing something like that can be beneficial to my packing for trips. When I do pack for trips I can take notes as to what I liked and what I would like to make better. Basically writing a mental self assessment on these things.
Plan better
A way to practice this is just to research places and campsites and where I'm allowed to camp, but that's rather boring. If I was going to work on this skill it would be for actual trips, which is nice because I would get the experience of going on trips as well as planning. It would be good to take notes of how far it is, where the campsites are or where can you camp, any regulations. It would be good to do some more research next time, that link Steve showed me can greatly help with these questions quickly.
Measurable
I can tell if this is working or not if I'm able to reduce the total space I use plus my total weight. I don't want to get to the point where I'm taking out things I need, but maybe finding ways to lighten the load. This will come with experience and will also be measured by how efficient I feel pulling these bits of gear out.
I can see if this is working if there is no issues when it comes to the actual trip. If you get somewhere and someone says hey you can't do this and you already know that then you're in good shape. Just being aware and knowledgeable of the area you're going to is pretty good signs of you learning and improving.
Appropriate
This will allow me to pack better, along with packing lighter. I will also be able to relate this skill to anytime I want to pack for things. I may be able to condense the gear I would bring on a multipitch or what I would put in my PFD. It's a good skill to have being able to utilize a piece of gear for many uses.
This is going to be a necessary skill to have in the outdoor industry. Especially planning bigger trips such as sophomore expedition, I can't just start driving somewhere and hope it works out, I need to know that everything will be alright and I won't be surprised by anything that may come about.
Realistic
Yes, I feel like this is one of those skills that you will always be able to improve on. Especially with new gear coming out and being able to afford more expensive things, I will always be improving my packing style and the gear I bring. I will also learn ways to use cheap items for very important purposes as well, whether it be something I need disposable or just a cheap way to make something that normally expensive. The improvement never ends.
This will take some time, since things will always be changing. I may have to do research on places I've already been to incase rules or regulations change. This is will also be one of those things that you can work on all the time, but it is something I not only have to do, but need to do to be successful.
Reviewed
If there's a negative response to how I changed the way I pack then I can either go back to what was working before or evaluate why what I tried to do didn't work and improve on that flaw. If I need to bring more gear if I were to guide or keep an eye on other people I would need to change this plan on condensing gear. but hopefully from what I learned it won't make a huge difference in terms of packing if I got better.
If my research before the trip was not enough and I failed to retain all the guidelines I need to be aware of, I can always ask local people such as rangers if I see them at all, if there is anything else I need to be aware of. Or I can do more research to ensure I don't miss any information.
Evaluated
I would said at the end of each trip I go on, I should do a little mental or written self assessment on how the overall packing side of the trip went and if there is anything I could immediately improve on or if it's more of a long term improvement, such as just being more efficient
Anytime planning for at trip I can practice these skills, even asking upper classmen or instructors if they've ever been there would be very informative. By the time I get to my sophomore I would like to be good at being able to research areas and regulations. That would be a good intern goal to have.
Time
I can practice whenever I go outdoors really, or even just bored in my room messing around with gear. As I learn information from class and reading up on things I can always make improvements. Along with actually experimenting things will give me knowledge on what works for me. As I said before this is something that will always need work and improvement on, but that's okay I enjoy playing around with gear.
I can practice this every time we go on a trip, even if its a class led trip. I can do my own research on the area so I have a better understanding what I'm getting into. Hopefully, by the time I graduate It would be nice to be very efficient and knowledgeable on these topics. by the time I get to my sophomore I will be good at being able to research areas and regulations. That would be a good intern goal to have.
