Chapter 12: Conventional Farming Problems 1. Modern Farming: fossil fuels, erosion. 2. Infrastructure: fragmentation, erosion issues, soil issues, gas prices. 3. Chemicals: pesticides, killing off important organisms, neurotics. 4. Irrigation: clogged soil and pest issues. 5. Expansive land: habitat degradation. 6. Confined animal feeding: antibiotics, growth hormones, fossil fuel
GMOs: created by combining genetically modified organisms with crops and animals. Different GMOs: pest resistants and tolerance to herbicides.
Transgenic vs. Marker Assisted Breeding- Transgenic breeding is where genes are taken from different organisms and put into another, while marker assisted is regular farm breeding.
Slash and burn: farmers cut and burn crops to make room for new ones because of infertile soil. usually conduction in the tropics and south east asia.
Problem with biofuel: takes up land, limits foreign oil usage, is based on pricing for farmers.
Farming conservation: urban farming: vertical farming, drop irrigation, not using biofuel, stop mono-cropping
