Health Management - Exercise
Compare:
A.K, J.M, and S.M all had a spiritual component to the occupation, whether they knew or not. The same three had similar beliefs for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A.K and J.M both wanted to gain muscle as a part of exercising. Every person had a goal to drive their core value through the occupation whether a passion or significant other was guiding the performance. Everyone wanted a better quality of life as an overarching value. A.K and J.P both said there was a "standard" to be held to in the occupation.
Contrast:
J.P was not spiritually connected to the occupation like the other three people. A.K's spirituality component happened to tie in with her religion. J.P did not think that exercise was essential as a belief. J.P's main value was to be healthy for his grandkids. S.M's value centered with being able to build a better lifestyle from scratch.
J.P
71 years old
Male
White
Retired
Beliefs:
Exercise is not "essential" for him to do daily, but he wants to stay healthy and keep his heart condition under control. Does not care about "gaining muscle", rather maintaining existing muscle.
Spirituality:
This occupation was not connected to spirituality for the individual
Context:
Lives with his wife in a single-story house with a 16-step flight of stairs to the basement where some gym equipment is located. Local gyms are not too far from home. There are no close walking / hiking routes.
Values:
He is passionate about being held to a standard by his wife to keep exercising and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. J.P also wants to continue a healthy lifestyle for his grandkids.
Performance Patterns:
Every day he sets a goal for himself to meet. An allotted 30 minutes per day is given to walking outside or inside around the house, which has developed into a routine. J.P does have habit of being sedentary for long periods of time; exercising helps break this habit. Supporting a less sedentary lifestyle has promoted a better performance in the occupation
S.M
59 years old
Male
White
County Engineer
Context:
Lives with his wife, one of his sons, and a dog in a two-story house with a basement. He is also a soccer referee. Local gyms in the area are small, but there are walking / hiking routes.
Performance Patterns:
S.M spends many hours per day being active outside with his career role. This consists of walking while completing his county checklists. The only habit mentioned was diet in order to help perform exercise. S.M has a routine every weekend as a soccer referee. These daily tasks support his efforts in achieving a better performance pattern in the occupation.
Beliefs:
Exercise to him is meaningful because of the "want" to be a role model for his grandson. Exercise is necessary for S.M as he wants to stay healthy and not be overweight.
Spirituality:
S.M did have a better connection with his community when picking up weekend refereeing. "I feel a better sense of belonging."

Due to his role as a student and employee, J.M is not able to perform this occupation at the capacity he would like to. He does fit exercising in over the weekends as a routine but would like this to become an every-other-day routine. J.M is a member at his local gym.
Beliefs:
He walks daily as a part of his job, which helps with the lack of gym time. Exercising is essential for his well-being and health. His goal is to improve muscle tone in the future but maintain his current state of health.
