role of the father, AO3 EVALUATION - Coggle Diagram
role of the father
attachment to fathers
-
e.g. stages of attachemnt (schaffer and emerson) found majority of babies first became attached to mother at 7 months
- 3% of cases, the father was sole object of attachment
- 27% mother and father both objects of attachment
most fathers go on to become important attachment figures
- 75% of babies studies by schaffer and emerson formed an attachment with fathers by 18 months
- babies protested when fathers walked away= sgn of attachment
-
-
heteronormativity
- this research is focusing on the role of the father based on the assumption that babies have two opposite gender parents however this isn't always the case
- there is no suggestion that having a single parent or 2 same gender parents has any negative impact on childrens development
AO3 EVALUATION
-
LIMITATION
conflicting evidence
-
2- longitudinal studies= grossman et al suggested that fathers as secondary attachment figures have an importat distinct role in childrens development involving play and simulation
- however if fathers have a disticnt and important role we would expect that children growing up with single mother and lesbia parent families would turn out different from those in 2 parent heterosexual families
-in studies ( mcCallum and golombock) consistently show that they dont develop differently
-
STRENGTH
counterpoint
-
2- could be that fathers typicallytake on distincive roles in 2 parent heterosexual families but other families adapt to accomodate the role played by fathers
3- this means that the question of a distinct role for fathers is clear.
- when present, fathers tend to adopt a distinct role but families can adapt to not having a father.
STRENGTH
real world application
-
2- parents and prospective parents agoneise of decisions like who should take on the primary caregiver role
- mothers may feel pressured to stay at home because of stereotypical views of mothers and fathers roles.
- fathers may be pressured to focus on work rather than parenting
- in some families it may not be economically the best solution
- research into the role of the father can be used to offer reasusuring advice to parents
- e.g. heterosexual parents informed informed that fathers are capable of becoming primary attachment figures
-lesbian, single mother families informed that not having a father around doesnt affect childs development
