Creating Sustainable Fisheries in Philippines
Impacted by
Fishermen relying on fisheries for livelihood & pay
Problem:
Decline of fish population & diversity around 2014. Decrease in sardine, anchovy, scad populations.
Possible solution:
Temporary ban on fisheries
Possible Problems:
Farmers unable to provide for their livelihoods during the off season
Families that consume seafood (especially those living around the Balayan Bay)
High population growth in the Philippines
Necessary sustainable change needed
Education on sustainable fishing
Providing for individuals that would lose income as result of closure
Possible solution:
providing cash-for-work program to pay fishers for their work cleaning up coastal areas in the Philippines!
Implementing annual ban on fisheries to ensure fish population recovers
Local government units & policies need to be enforced: maritime police, government regulations!
Continued regulation of fish population to gauge biodiversity
Working with communities!
Educating fishers and community about protecting the environment and maintaining healthy biodiveristy.
Raising awareness about fishery management and regulation
Educational programs (akin to the ones in the Indonesian case study) to warm against the dangers of overfishing & to promote community morale!
Working with the Philippine government (and adopting their governing style) to ensure efficient and effective regulation across the Balayan Bay area.
Included implementing "participatory, decentralized, multi-sectoral governance approach the Philippines has practiced for decades" (p. 43).
Ensuring government and stakeholder communication (includes sharing of data collected of the Balayan Bay, Verde Island Passage, etc.
Necessary in order to...
Preserve increase resiliency of marine habitats to climate impacts, such as "rising sea surface temperatures, changes in fish populations and coastal storms" (p. 32).
All crucial to lead to increased well-being and healthy lives!
Provide fishers with sustainable high-quality sources of seafood year-round to live healthy, happy lives
Preserve ecosystem, such as temperature regulation in the area, prey population regulation, water clarity and quality, and more!
