Formative and Summative Assessments
Ron Scott
Formative Assessment
A term used to describe the process of getting and analyzing information about knowledge/skills/etc. which is then used to accordingly adjust instructional strategies, activities, and goals.
Pre-assessment: Used before instruction or learning begins to determine how much a student knows or can do. This is never graded.
See Diagnostic assessment
Ongoing Assessment: Used throughout the learning process to determine if and how much the students are learning, understanding, and improving, and is used to adjust instructional strategies and goals.

Summative Assessment
This is a process used at the end of a learning process or unit, and is used to determine how much the student learned, now knows, or now can do. This is frequently compared with the formative assessments to ensure that improvement was made.
