Assessment of, as, and for learning
Assessment as Learning
Definition
: Assessment as learning occurs when students are their own assessors. Students monitor their own learning, ask questions and use a range of strategies to decide what they know and can do, and how to use assessment information for new learning.
The Purposes:
encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning
requires students to ask questions about their learning
involves teachers and students creating learning goals to encourage growth and development
provides ways for students to use formal and informal feedback and self-assessment to help them understand the next steps in learning
The Examples
Progress Monitoring - Students track their own progress, and teachers provide regular feedback to help them adjust their learning strategies as needed.
Learning Contracts - Students and teachers agree on specific learning goals and methods for achieving them, and regularly check in to track progress.
Peer Assessment - Students work together to evaluate and give feedback on each other's work.
Self-reflection - Students reflect on their own learning, strengths, and weaknesses, and set goals for improvement.
Assessment for Learning
Definition
: Assessment for learning involves teachers using evidence about students' knowledge, understanding and skills to inform their teaching. Sometimes referred to as ‘formative assessment', it usually occurs throughout the teaching and learning process to clarify student learning and understanding.
The Examples:
Classroom discussion and questioning - Teachers ask questions to gauge students' understanding and provide feedback.
Exit tickets - Students write brief summaries of what they learned at the end of a class or lesson.
Response journals - Students reflect on their learning and record their thoughts and questions.
Classroom observation - Teachers observe students during class to assess their understanding and skills.
Quizzes and diagnostic tests - Teachers use these assessments to identify students' strengths and weaknesses and adjust their instruction accordingly.
Presentations - Verbal or visual presentations that demonstrate understanding of a concept.

Assessment of Learning
Definition
: Assessment of learning assists teachers in using evidence of student learning to assess achievement against outcomes and standards. Sometimes referred to as ‘summative assessment', it usually occurs at defined key points during a teaching work or at the end of a unit, term or semester, and may be used to rank or grade students. The effectiveness of assessment of learning for grading or ranking purposes depends on the validity, reliability and weighting placed on any one task. Its effectiveness as an opportunity for learning depends on the nature and quality of the feedback.
The purposes:
is used to plan future learning goals and pathways for students
provides evidence of achievement to the wider community, including parents, educators, the students themselves and outside groups
provides a transparent interpretation across all audiences.
The examples:
Traditional Tests and Exams - Multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, true/false, and essay questions are common formats.
Quizzes - Short, regular assessments to check for understanding.
Projects - Long-term assignments that require students to apply what they have learned.
Portfolios - Collections of work that demonstrate growth and mastery over time.
Standardized Tests - Such as the SAT, ACT, and state standardized tests.
Accreditation or Certification Exams - Exams that measure student achievement and readiness for a particular career or profession.

Diagnostic Assessment
Definition
: This is a form of assessment that is given to students at the beginning of a new unit (topic) to identify students’ strengths and weaknesses in specific subject areas or skills. The results from the assessment are often used to tailor the instruction to meet the individual needs of the students.
The Purposes
To identify what a student knows and does not know about a particular subject or skill before the instruction begins.
To personalize the teaching approach to meet the needs of individual students.
To help the teachers to identify the learning strengths and weaknesses of new incoming students.
To maximize students’ learning potential.
The Examples
Pre-tests
- These are given at the beginning of a course/unit/topic to assess students’ prior knowledge and understanding of the subject.
Surveys
- these can be used to gather information about students’ learning styles, interests, and motivation.
Interviews
- teachers may conduct one on one interviews with students to gain a deeper understanding of their prior knowledge, learning preferences, and areas of need.
Portfolios
- these can be used to gather samples of students’ work over a period of time to assess their progress and identify areas of need.

Perfomance Assessment
Definition
: This is a type of assessment that measures a student’s ability to apply the skills and knowledge learned from a unit, topic, or course of study.
Purposes:
To measure students learning
To provide students with constructive feedback so they can understand their strengths and areas for improvement.
Help teachers to identify the areas where they need to adjust instruction to better meet the needs of students.
To support students learning and development.
Examples
Projects - these might be a science project, research paper, and history presentation.
Essays - these are used to test writing skills and understanding of the content of the course.
Oral presentations - these require students to present their ideas and knowledge in a clear manner.
Hands-on activities and demonstrations, such as lab experiments, artistic performances, and athletic events.

Formative and Summative Assessments
Formative Assessments are an evaluation of the learning progress inside the classroom. They occur during the course of the unit and help the teacher understand the learning of the students and how to adjust teaching if necessary. Sometimes they are graded but for the most part they are not.

Summative assessments are what a student has learned throughout the course. They occur at the end of a unit or module and assess how much a student has mastered the concept taught throughout the course. They are usually graded.
