D's were gay men who got pleasure from pain. Consent was held to not be a defence in this case, as it was for sadistic purposes.

R v Clarence (1889) - D had sex with wife knowing he had an STD. ABH charge was dropped as wife consented to the risk of catching something
R v Barnes [2004] - held that conduct outside the rules of the game may not be criminal as it could be an error, reaction or misjudgment
